North East Chamber of Commerce
Chamber of the Year and Best Use of IT to Improve Business Performance
The North East Chamber of Commerce (NECC), based in Durham, won the much sought after accolade of Chamber of the Year at the Chamber Awards 2004. It was also presented with the award for the Best Use of IT to Improve Business Performance.
A unique Chamber
NECC is unique as it is the only Accredited Chamber to represent an entire region. With more than 5,000 members across the North East it is recognised as the leading business voice in the region.
Vision, drive and ambition
The Chamber of the Year award was given to NECC due to its vision, drive and ambition. The Chamber has achieved an increase in membership of more than two per cent for the last few years. It is also considered to be a driving force in its community, establishing a highly influential position on key issues within the North East region.
Innovative technology
Its innovative use of database delivery technology led it to be presented with the Best Use of IT to Improve Business Performance award. The database technology enabled NECC to change the way it operates which has in effect led to cost reductions. It has also helped to improve the service that the Chamber offers to its members and surrounding communities.
What the awards mean to NECC
George Cowcher, NECC chief executive said, “Collecting the first ever Chamber of the Year award was an extremely proud moment for all who have worked tirelessly to make the North East Chamber of Commerce the success it is. NECC has cemented itself as the voice of North East business backed by an increasing membership, an impressive training company and a portfolio of services that gives member companies a real benefit.
Life after the awards
George Cowcher added, “Winning the award had a dual effect – it confirmed that NECC is going in the right direction and it also gave impetus for further improvements. The resulting media coverage also raised the organisation’s profile and standing within the local business community.”
2005 is a significant year for NECC as it marks its 10th anniversary since the merger of the former Chambers of Teesside, Tyne & Wear and Tynedale. Winning the award has added to the air of celebration and has also helped to promote a raft of high-profile events to mark the major landmark.
