England's last great Gothic revival building
The Royal Courts of Justice are the UK's main civil courts. It is here that the High Court presides over the most serious and complex civil trials in the country including divorce, libel, civil liability and appeals. The courts are housed in an imposing Victorian Gothic building, which was designed by G E Street, and was opened by Queen Victoria in 1882. The building is thought to be the architect's finest achievement, and is one of England's last great Gothic revival buildings.
35 million bricks, 1000 rooms and 3.5 miles of corridors!
The building is made from 35 million bricks faced with Portland stone, and the Royal Courts of Justice are said to contain 1,000 rooms linked by 3.5 miles of corridors. It is thought that the stress of constructing the magnificent building was so great that it caused Street's early death.
The Great Hall
The magnificent Great Hall (230ft long rising to 80ft above its intricate Italian marble mosaic floor) is reminiscent of a cathedral nave in both style and scale. Soaring arches and beautiful stained glass windows ornamented with the coats of arms of Lord Chancellors and Keepers of the Great Seal create a majestic setting for a large dinner or reception.
Court attendance for the public
The public are admitted to all 88 court rooms, with lists in the central hall indicating which cases are being held and how far the proceedings have gone. The Royal Courts of Justice also contains a small exhibition of legal dress.
